We Have a Puker

You all want to read about puke today, yes?

Can someone please tell me why it is that my healthy kids get sick so much? Or, more importantly, why do my healthy kids only get sick at the most annoying times EVER??? Actually, don't tell me why my healthy kids get sick so much, I know the answer...they're kids. I get that. I don't like it, but I get it.

Despite starting out our lives as parents with the plan to always put aside time to spend together alone, Steve and I have fallen waaaay off the wagon on that one. Part of it is because planning for and paying for a real sitter is hard. The other part is because my mom and dad have such a hoppin' social life these days that we have to plan our date nights way in advance. My brain doesn't work that way; Steve's doesn't either. We do have friends that would swap date nights with us and at least one really amazing single friend who would drop almost anything to watch our kids. Unfortunately, I can't get over the friend guilt on that one. I spend the entire night worrying that the kids are ruining our friendships {because, let's face it, if you watch my kids and they fight and whine and sass all night... you're going to start to try to avoid me at some point}. So what do we do? Nothing. We might order dinner just for us and watch TV or get a Redbox movie after the kids are in bed. Sometimes we pretend that church is like a big group date with a few hundred other couples. There are other days when we chill with some Starbucks and reading material together. {But does reading Facebook updates on your phone while you sip Starbucks at the kitchen table really count as a date? Hahaha. I just answered that question for myself...it's a lame, lame date.}

Anyway...  Our therapist {yes, we have a therapist...she helps us stay friends} told us that we had to spend time together as a couple without the kids. It's not easy with Steve's schedule, but we managed to plan a Saturday afternoon for the girls to spend time with my parents and for us to go out. We were going to go to West Side Market and get lunch in The Flats. Seriously, this was huge. Normally, we do "dinner" and a movie. That means we eat huge tubs of popcorn in the theater and roll ourselves out the door when the movie ends.

Every morning, Abby tells me her belly hurts. Every morning, I tell her to poop. Usually, she gets so annoyed and offended by me saying that, that she forgets her belly hurts and moves onto being mad at me instead. That was the scene on Saturday except this time she didn't get mad at me and made a dash for the Polka-Ducky bathroom {no, really, that's what we call it} where she proceeded to go potty and then forced herself to vomit {she did...she worked hard for that puking episode thinking it would help her belly}. Then, because she earned a Behavior Plan reward earlier in the week, she and Daddy went off to Dunkin Donuts for breakfast. When they returned home, she had a chocolate mustache and was happy as a lark. A quick stop at the gas station/car wash, and we were off to my parents' house. Once we got there, Miss Bubbly turned into Miss Quiet-and-Sad.

That's when the puking started. I will never look at a Dunkin Donuts chocolate donut the same way again. I've been scarred for life. So we left Hayley with my parents {after I Cloroxed the entire bathroom}. My mom took her clothes shopping. My dad watched Wreck-It Ralph with her. Honestly, it was probably better for her to get some one-on-one time with my parents anyway; she misses the days before Abby came along {or so she says...she was two when Abby was born}.

And what did we do for our Date Day, you ask?

Steve picked up Chipotle and brought it home for us to eat together. Then, he had his hair cut, went to Target, bought us a new kitchen trash can, picked up Starbucks, and got crickets for Lou.

I stayed home, made meatloaf to freeze, argued with Abigail over why it was that she could only take little bites of saltines and small sips of soda, listened to Abigail run to the bathroom to puke when she didn't want to follow my suggestions, and wrote & read blogs posts.

We are so cool. Better luck next time, right?

  1. So sorry that you and Steve missed out on some alone time together. I hope Abby is feeling much better today. That blog title totally made my day though! xoxo
